Bite Inhibition and nipping are big issues for people and their dogs. I often see dogs that are a year old or more that have yet to be taught that people are not an appropriate chewing device. They need our direction and teaching early and often so they can learn the rules. Here is a general outline of the concepts involved. Jace was unable to pass the ASPCA safer test when he first arrived at the shelter due to food aggression issues he exhibited and was slated to be euthanized. A staff member at the shelter took a special interest in Jace and believed he could be helped and she reached out to Greg Winters of Personal Dog Training to see if he could help Jace get off of death row. Greg worked directly with shelter staff to coach them through how to help Jace learn a new way of relating to food which led him to passing the ASPCA safer test and being cleared for placement in a new home. Here is Jace showing off his new way of being around food.
Greg Winters of Personal Dog Training and Peanut show off some real life off leash distraction skills. Having your dog off leash should not be taken lightly. If you do not specifically develop clear communication and reliability is it not worth the risk.
Greg Winters and Peanut of Personal Dog Training show how to exercise your dog on a rainy day. Everything from basic commands, controlled play that helps channel and manage a dogs prey drive as well as working out on the treadmill are part of the plan. A well exercised dog is key to helping them learn and relax.
Personal Dog Training client Erika shows off the work she has done with Mimi. Only two weeks after joining her family Mimi can sit, stay and come reliably. It is interesting how we know that dogs can do amazing things like search and rescue, herding or seeing eye work but forget that same ability allows them to learn other things that help them be the relaxed and balanced family member we want them to be. The only need us to know and understand how they think and learn. |

Understanding your dogs energy and socialization style is an important part of helping them have positive social interactions with other dogs. Dogs can and should be able to read each others energy and socialization style and interact accordingly. Here is an example of two dogs Sky and Sadie having a mutually positive play session. The idea that all dogs play the same is not accurate. Being aware of how to read your dogs will give you a headstart in recognizing the type of interactions that are comfortable for them |

Silent Commands are a way of reinforcing the training you do. Realizing that your dog gathers information from numerous sources can be a real breakthrough for alot of people. Dogs are great at reading us and will do so using all their senses. Words, sounds, body language and energy are all ways we communicate with our dogs and they are always gathering information whether we know it or not. They are like truth detectors! |
